Matisse, who had to be convinced, rented a warehouse in Nice to work on what became \u201cThe Dance,\u201d only to discover, after a first try, that he\u2019d gotten the measurements wrong.\u00a0(In 1990, the early version of the triptych mural was discovered and ended up at the\u00a0<a class=\"ArticleBody__link___1FS03\" href=\"http:\/\/www.mam.paris.fr\/en\/node\/516\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Mus\u00e9e d\u2019Art Moderne<\/a>, in Paris.) Not surprisingly, the second painter to be commissioned by the Barnes, Pat Steir, asked the Barnes to send their own measurements. Then she doubled-checked them herself.
